Reminiscing of Ventures Past: A New York Summer

Image
Of course when living in paradise along the shores of Love Beach, the statement, "Summer season is ending," is easy to misunderstand. For millions it denotes a change in weather switching out seasonal clothing from flip flops and swimsuits to long sleeves, jeans, and closed toed shoes. For us lucky island teachers it means meeting new smiling faces ready and eager to absorb all the knowledge we can share in ten months. Our flip flops and swimsuits will never be put away because at the end of each school day, we are fortunate enough to be able to return to the shore to rejuvenate our eagerness and desire to teach. Oh, the joys of endless summers!! Preparing for the beginning of this new school year, Danny and I have found ourselves reminiscing about summers past. Although he wouldn't trade a single day flying over the beautiful wonders of the islands nature affords us and I would never give up the treasures I enjoy snorkeling and strolling around Nassau; we still love...

The two best times of the day here on Love Beach are dawn and dusk. Each beginning and each ending provide fantastic views with the sun, sea, sky, and clouds working together to share nature's beauty. Sunrise- a reminder of new beginnings and new opportunities. A Walk Through History- Clifton Heritage Park, Nassau, Bahamas

Image
Images captured by Daniel Piraino Gateway to the World: Stone steps cut through the rock served as a passage way from sea to land for sailors in need of freshwater and food as early as the 1700's. One of our favorite places here in Nassau is Clifton Heritage Park. Along the south western shores of New Providence Island visitors can piece together the daily lives and rituals of the earliest settlers long before Columbus' arrival in 1492. Remnants and artifacts of the Lucayans found along the shoreline and throughout caves reveal the strength of the tribe important for survival. Following the trails around the point we step forward in time to the 18th and 19th centuries.  Walking through the remains of homes built by the early Loyalist plantation owners and the Slave Village, we are awe-struck. Structures surviving since the 1700's against natures elements from the salty ocean air and years of waves and storms beating against the shore connect us to Bahamian a...

Jewels of the Sea

Image
Twinkle, twinkle shards of glass How I wonder about your past Tossing and tumbling with the tides Leaving mysteries which you hide From a pirates old bottle of rum The queen’s finest chinaware Or stained glass pane from a Spanish Galleon Your origin washed away with the seas caress Now, with worn edges and opaque texture jewels in the sand is what you’ve become Shimmering and sparkling; blue, green, brown, and clear For the lucky, radiant orange or red just may appear The excitement and anticipation of claiming the bounty That is the ocean’s gift for the treasure hunter Collecting treasures along the north west shore in Nassau, Bahamas. ( Images captured with GoPro Session and Samsung Galaxy Note5 ) Legend has it that sea glass is “mermaid tears”. The tale explains that whenever a sailor drowned, mermaids would cry, filling the seas with particles of their emotions. Tossing and tumbling in the ocean tides would wash the tears to shore wh...
